Automation guide

Restore your Mac workspace automatically.

The best restore is the one you do not have to start. Here is how to have your layout come back on wake and when displays change.

Recommended: SnapState. Arm a trigger and SnapState restores your saved workspace on wake from sleep, when a monitor connects or disconnects, or when a matching display layout appears. $9.99 one-time, up to three Macs.

What macOS does on its own

macOS can reopen windows when you log back in (the Reopen windows checkbox at restart) and apps can resume their own windows. It does not remember a cross-app layout, does not put apps back on their Spaces reliably, and does nothing when a monitor reconnects. See why windows move after sleep.

How SnapState restores automatically

SnapState is a native macOS menu bar app that saves named workspaces. Each one keeps the windows on every Space with position and size, the apps needed to relaunch them, the display layout, full screen windows, and all open tabs in Safari, Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc and Chromium once Automation permission is granted. Restore from the menu bar, with Control-Command-1 to 6, or automatically on wake from sleep, when a monitor connects or disconnects, or when a matching display layout appears.

Save a workspace for each desk setup, such as Desk and Laptop only. Turn on the wake, monitor connect or matching display layout trigger. When the setup changes, SnapState restores the one that fits the displays you have now. You can still restore any workspace by hand from the menu bar.

What are the honest limits?

SnapState does not tile or snap windows, it cannot split one app's windows across several Spaces, Firefox is not supported yet, tab groups are not restored, and it requires macOS 15.7 or later. There is no free trial.
