Alternatives guide

Display Maid alternatives for Mac.

Display Maid puts open windows back. These tools go further, or cost less, depending on what you need.

Quick answer

If you want more than window positions, pick SnapState. It restores windows like Display Maid, and also relaunches closed apps, reopens every open browser tab and can restore automatically on wake. It is $9.99 one-time for up to three Macs.

What Display Maid does, and where it stops

Display Maid is a $5.99 Mac App Store utility that saves and restores window locations based on your display configuration or profiles you create. It can restore when a display connects or disconnects and when an app launches. Per its own FAQ, it is not an app launcher: it only moves windows of apps that are already open. It does not put browser tabs back and does not support full screen or tiled windows. For a head-to-head, see Display Maid vs SnapState.

The alternatives

1. SnapState (best overall upgrade)

A menu bar app that saves named workspaces: window positions and sizes, the apps to relaunch, the display layout and all open tabs in Safari and Chromium browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc. Restore from the menu, with Control-Command-1 to 6, or automatically on wake, display connect or disconnect. $9.99 one-time, up to three Macs, 14-day refund, macOS 15.7 or later, with built-in auto-updates. It also restores layouts across multiple Spaces, each Space as you switch to it. It does not tile windows.

2. Stay (positions only)

Version 1.5.1, macOS 14.6 or later. Stay stores a set of windows for each display combination and restores them as displays connect and disconnect, which is close to what Display Maid does. It does not list app relaunch or browser tabs. Stay vs SnapState.

3. Moom (tiling first)

$15 from Many Tricks. Moom is mainly a tiling and window positioning tool, and it can also save window layouts. It does not list browser tab restore or a wake trigger. Moom vs SnapState.

4. Spencer (Spaces layouts, higher price)

$25 for one Mac or $45 for three, macOS 13 or later. Spencer saves layouts across native macOS Spaces and can launch saved apps. Its site says it cannot reopen browser tabs once they are closed. Spencer vs SnapState.

5. Rectangle (snapping, not restoring)

Rectangle snaps the front window to halves, thirds and corners with shortcuts. It does not remember a layout, so it is a complement to a restore tool rather than a replacement. Rectangle, Magnet and Raycast vs SnapState.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Display Maid?

SnapState is the closest upgrade. Like Display Maid it restores window positions when a display connects or disconnects, and it also relaunches closed apps, reopens all open browser tabs and can restore automatically on wake from sleep. It is $9.99 one-time for up to three Macs.

What is the best Display Maid alternative?

SnapState. It restores window positions like Display Maid, and also relaunches closed apps, reopens all open browser tabs and can restore automatically on wake, for $9.99 one-time on up to three Macs. Stay stores window positions per display combination but does not list app relaunch or browser tab restore.

Why look for a Display Maid alternative?

Display Maid only repositions windows for apps that are already open. Its own FAQ says it is not an app launcher, and it does not restore closed browser tabs. If you need the apps and tabs back after sleep, a restart or undocking, you need a workspace tool such as SnapState.

Which Display Maid alternative restores windows after sleep?

SnapState has a restore-on-wake trigger, so a saved workspace comes back automatically when the Mac wakes. It can also restore when a display connects or disconnects.

Are Rectangle or Magnet Display Maid alternatives?

Not really. Rectangle and Magnet snap the front window into a grid. They do not remember a whole layout across apps and displays, so they do not fix windows that scatter after sleep or a monitor change.
